Borough Market has announced the appointment of Alistair Maddox as chief executive and Nicole Casey as director of operations, in a move to strengthen its senior leadership.

Maddox, who takes up the role on 1 September, succeeds as head of the charitable trust that runs the historic London food market. He brings over 20 years of experience across the food, property and market sectors, including senior roles at Broadway Market and Brixton Village.

The appointment follows what the trust described as a “rigorous selection process” and is backed by its board of trustees, traders and staff.

Maddox said: “Borough Market is more than just a collection of great food stalls, it’s a vibrant community supporting over 100 independent traders.

“Having spent years running some of London’s top destinations like Broadway Market and Brixton Village, I’m honoured to lead a trusted institution that creates a platform for small businesses to thrive and champions sustainability and education. I’m excited to build on this legacy with the talented businesses and staff who make this place so special.”

As the new director of operations, Casey will oversee the day-to-day operation of the market. She has a background in venue management and public realm strategy and will work closely with traders, partners and the local community.

Casey said: “I’m looking forward to working with our talented team and getting to know the diverse community that comes to shop, get expert tips and share a love of food at London’s oldest market.

“It’s such a unique place, and I’m excited to continue to honour its rich heritage while also being focused on the future development of Borough Market.”

Shane Holland, chair of trustees at Borough Market, added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Alistair and Nicole to Borough Market. This is a strong, values-led team, perfectly placed to guide the Market through our next strategic phase – to develop our position as a cultural and culinary landmark rooted in our charitable purpose.”

Originally revitalised in the late 1990s, Borough Market now operates six days a week and hosts more than 100 independent traders. Run by a charitable trust, it is known for its focus on sustainability, food education and support for emerging food businesses.
