One third of hospitality staff quit their jobs within six months of starting, according to data from Cairn Hotel Group.

The survey also found that over half of adults believe that a job in hospitality is one without progression.

Further to this, nearly a quarter of Gen Z’s in hospitality jobs quit because they see no progression.

A third of respondents would choose to leave hospitality to pursue a different career, with millennials the most likely generation to do so.

Moreover, 78% of adults have never considered a career change into hospitality, including 82% of millennials.

Richard Adams, HR director at Cairn, said: “It’s shocking to see the results of our new research which indicate there are clear myths that absolutely need to be tackled surrounding the industry and what opportunities are out there within hospitality.

“For various reasons, hospitality does sometimes struggle to recruit and retain talent, so it’s essential that hospitality employers do what they can to provide the best working environments and places for their staff to learn and grow as it’s crucial that we change minds about working in hotels, restaurants and bars.”

He added: “At Cairn Hotel Group we pride ourselves on the opportunities and support we provide our staff and understand everyone has different needs at different points in their life. From offering sabbaticals to reskilling and facilitating career changes, it’s so important that as an employer we work with every individual to carve a career that works for them.

“Our research indicates a clear gap between how people currently perceive the industry and what’s actually out there, and we hope the whole sector can do more to tackle this issue.”
