KFC plans to open more than 50 new UK restaurants this year as part of a £1.49bn investment in its estate over the next five years.

The fried chicken chain, which operates more than 1,000 restaurants in the UK, aims to spend £466m on expanding its estate, with a target of 500 additional sites across the UK and Ireland over the next decade. It will also upgrade more than 200 existing outlets.

The company has released its acquisition requirements, seeking freehold and leasehold units at retail and leisure parks, development sites, high street locations, travel hubs, shopping centres and food courts.

In addition, the chain stated that it is focusing on drive-through sites between 0.3 and 1.5 acres and in-line units ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 sq ft.

KFC is also offering a £20k finder’s fee to agents who identify suitable locations across the whole of the UK and Ireland.

The announcement comes as KFC marks 60 years in the UK and faces increasing competition from rivals such as Wingstop, Slim Chickens, Dave’s Hot Chicken and Popeyes.
