The Barn at Moor Hall, West Lancashire, has been awarded a coveted Michelin star in this year’s Guide for Great Britain and Ireland.
The menu at the restaurant is overseen by head chef Nathan Cornwell who took the helm in 2019. Cornwell works alongside Mark Birchall, chef patron, to ensure the menu “celebrates” ingredients picked from the kitchen garden or produced within the venue’s five-acre estate.
The 65-seat restaurant, featuring original beams, rustic brickwork and an open kitchen, is
situated on the first floor of a converted barn adjacent to the main house and two

Running the restaurant day-to-day, Cornwell has designed a varied menu of seasonal dishes including 60 day aged Jersey beef tartare, Jerusalem artichoke, nasturtium; Squab pigeon with confit leg parcel, quince purée and chutney sauce and Yorkshire rhubarb with woodruff mousse, rhubarb sorbet and meringue.

In keeping with Birchall’s and Cornwell’s commitment to sustainability and self-sufficiency, the restaurant said its ground floor also houses a small dairy, charcuterie, and meat-ageing room.
Birchall said: “I’m extremely proud of Nathan and the whole team in The Barn for achieving their first Michelin star as well as everyone that’s made achieving a Green Star possible. The Barn is a beautiful neighbourhood restaurant, offering simple, seasonal dishes. It’s a great reward for Nathan and the team and I know our guests will be as thrilled as we are.”
Cornwell added: “I am so proud to see The Barn win a star. As a team we’ve worked tirelessly to make The Barn what it is today and I’m fortunate to work with such incredible people and world class produce.
“Thank you to Michelin for awarding our restaurant with such a coveted accolade and, of course, our guests, suppliers, and team. Finally, a huge thank you to Mark who has given me the platform to achieve these goals.”
