Clerkenwell fish and chip restaurant, United Chip, has been forced to close for the summer following “odour complaints” from local residents.
In a statement released today, United Chip, said: “Due to odour complaints from local residents we have had to close the shop for the remainder of the summer, while we address the problem. We hope to reopen soon.”
Fish and chip restaurants have long faced issues from local residents over extractions, with a faint scent of vinegar, dripping or grease enough for environmental health officers to begin an investigation.
During the short time it has been open, Union Chip attracted rave reviews from critics including Jay Rayner, who described the restaurant’s curry sauce as “far too bloody good”.
Yotam Ottolenghi’s new Rovi restaurant also had to close due to issues with extractions less than a month ago.
Union Chip has not yet given a date it expects to reopen and when contacted by Catering Today, a recorded message claimed the restaurant was “getting battered at the moment”.
