McDonald’s has announced plans to reopen the majority of its UK restaurants for walk-in takeaway on Monday 22 February.
The fast-food giant told customers in an email that it would be trialling the reopening with enhanced safety measures in place at a select number of its establishments this week.
While its franchises across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are currently subject to similar regulations, government restrictions mean the company’s Scottish restaurants will remain closed to walk-in takeaways.
Paul Pomroy, CEO at McDonald’s UK, said: “A month ago we made the voluntary decision to temporarily close walk-in takeaway while we reviewed our safety measures to ensure they reflect the evolving nature of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Working closely with third party safety expert NSF International, we identified a small number of changes to further enhance our procedures, and we are currently in the process of rolling these out to restaurants.”
A number of new safety measures will be introduced alongside the reopenings, including visors and face coverings for employees who directly face customers, updated guidance for couriers, and revised processes for customer and courier flow within the restaurants.
Pomroy added that he is “confident” the new measures will strengthen the group’s “already robust” safety measures.
