Scottish pub group and brewer Belhaven will be temporarily closing its historic pub in Edinburgh’s Old Town, The Beehive Inn, for a refurbishment.

Belhaven, which is part of Greene King, will shut the pub to customers from 12 January 2026 while renovation works are carried out and is expected to open in February. The Beehive Inn dates back more than 400 years and sits beneath Edinburgh Castle.

Refurbishment plans include a redesign of the ground floor bar and the creation of an open-plan restaurant on the first floor. A whisky bar will also be added, featuring more than 100 whiskies, alongside flights and tasting sessions.

The top floor is to be reconfigured as a multi-purpose space for events such as comedy nights, as well as private meetings, dinners and group bookings. The operator said the works would aim to refresh the venue while retaining its historic character.

All 42 existing staff will be retained during the closure and redeployed across other venues, according to Belhaven. Additional front- and back-of-house roles are expected to be advertised ahead of the reopening.

David Race, general manager at the Beehive Inn, said: “Following our refurbishment, we look forward to offering something for everyone, whether you’re stopping in for a midweek pint or whisky, enjoying a Sunday roast or celebrating a special occasion.”

David McBride, business unit director for Belhaven pubs, added: “The Beehive Inn is Belhaven’s flagship venue in Scotland, and it holds a special place in the hearts of many in the local community as well as those who have visited Edinburgh over the years.

“This investment marks the next chapter in the Beehive’s journey, and we’re looking forward to showcasing the new and improved pub and offering fantastic experiences, which will help to solidify its reputation as a premier destination for Scottish hospitality in the capital.”
