Chef Simon Rimmer has announced that the vegetarian restaurant Greens, which he co-founded, has shut with immediate effect after 33 years of trading.

Rimmer announced the closure of its site in Didsbury via social media and blamed the rise in rent and running costs and called it a “heartbreaking day”.

He co-owns the restaurant with Simon Connelly and also co-hosts Sunday Brunch with Tim Lovejoy on Channel 4.

Rimmer and Connelly announced in a post on Instagram that the brand’s sister restaurant in Sale would remain open.

Rimmer said in a video on X: “Our landlords have increased our rent by in the region of 35%. The cost of raw materials, the cost of heat, light and power, employing people and general food costs have meant that the business unfortunately has become unviable, so with immediate effect we’ve unfortunately shut the door.”
