Hydes Brewery has appointed Niam Kenny as new general manager and committed £550,000 to refurbishing The Old Plough in Ashton on Mersey.
Kenny steps into her new role following the major investment in the Sale venue, one of the oldest in Hydes’ estate. She brings 14 years of experience in the hospitality sector, most recently serving as deputy manager at the Abel Heywood in Manchester city centre.
Originally acquired by Hydes in 1911, The Old Plough is undergoing a comprehensive renovation. Planned improvements include a redesigned bar, new seating, locally themed interior decor, an upgraded beer garden and refreshed signage.
Kenny, who joined The Old Plough team in 2023, has already led community initiatives and fundraising efforts for causes including St Anne’s Hospice. She also took part in this year’s Great Manchester Run alongside colleagues from Hydes.
The refurbishment is part of a wider modernisation strategy across Hydes’ 40-plus pubs in the North West and North Wales. The company has invested more than £10m in upgrades since 2022 and plans further developments into 2025.
Founded in 1863, Hydes is based at Media City in Salford. It operates its own brewery and supplies beers to wholesalers, pub companies and brewers across the UK.
Kenny said: “This is a significant moment for The Old Plough. We’re not just refreshing the look and feel of the pub, we’re investing in its future at the heart of the Ashton on Mersey community. I’m incredibly excited to take on this new role and to build on the fantastic culture and success we already have here.”
Adam Mayers, Hydes managing director, added: “Niamh is a driven and passionate hospitality leader who embodies everything Hydes stands for, exceptional service, community spirit, and forward-thinking leadership. She’s the ideal person to take The Old Plough to new heights.
“Pubs like The Old Plough are the heartbeat of local communities. By investing in both our venues and our people, we’re ensuring they remain vibrant, welcoming spaces for generations to come.”
