Greene King has invested more than £6m in its pubs across London in 2025, with 14 managed sites reopening following refurbishment work.

The brewer and pub company, which operates more than 1,600 managed pubs nationwide and 166 across Greater London, said the investment programme aims to enhance customer experience and modernise some of its best-known sites.

Among the key projects is the Railway on Liverpool Street, which reopened after a £1m renovation. Dating back to 1736, the pub was overhauled with new décor, upgraded furniture, improved accessibility and refurbished private rooms. The venue has reported a 113% increase in covers compared with the same period last year.

The City of Quebec in Marylebone, recognised as London’s oldest LGBTQIA+ venue, also reopened this summer after a complete refurbishment. Greene King said the site has recorded a 77% rise in booked covers since relaunching in June.

Zoe Bowley, managing director of Greene King, said: “London is world-renowned for its hospitality, and we’re proud to play our part in offering top-tier customer experiences in pubs that are rich in heritage. Many of our sites are considered key landmarks of the city and have become popular tourist attractions, in addition to being key social pillars that serve their local communities day in and day out.

“The success of our investment activity in the capital highlights the value in protecting our pubs and giving them a new lease of life, as this helps us to attract and engage customers and adapt to changing consumer needs, providing stylish, modern facilities and delicious food and drinks menus whilst also staying true to the unique charm that each pub holds.”

A further five London pubs are scheduled for renovation before the end of the year, bringing the total number of capital investments to 19 in 2025. These include the Adam and Eve in St James, the Mason Arms in Mayfair, the Earls Court Tavern, the Bayswater Arms and the Two Brewers in Covent Garden, which is due to reopen on 7 November following a month-long refurbishment.
