McDonald’s has revealed that its global comparable sales increased by 11.7% for the second quarter ended 30 June, with double-digit growth reported across each segment.

The fast food giant’s digital Systemwide sales in its top six markets were also over $8bn (£6.2bn) for Q2, which represents nearly 40% of its Systemwide sales.

The group’s consolidated revenues increased 14% in constant currencies, while its consolidated operating income increased 81%.

Results included $18m (£14m) of pre-tax restructuring charges related to the company’s internal effort to “accelerate the organisation”.

Excluding these current year charges, as well as prior year pre-tax charges and gains of $1.2bn (£900m) and $271m (£210.7m) respectively, consolidated operating income increased 20%.

Diluted earnings per share was $3.15 (£2.45), an increase of 97% – 98% in constant currencies.

Chris Kempczinski, president and CEO of McDonald’s, said: “Our second quarter results reflect consistently strong execution of our ‘Accelerating the Arches’ strategy, with global comparable sales growth of 11.7% and double-digit comparable sales growth across each of our segments.

“The McDonald’s brand has never been stronger and I remain inspired by the ability of the McDonald’s system to create cultural conversations and develop industry-leading innovations.”

He added: “While global macroeconomic challenges persist, we continue to invest in our growth drivers and our brand to meet the customer needs of tomorrow.”
