Famously Proper (FPL), the owner of Byron Burgers, has announced the acquisition of southern fried chicken brand Mother Clucker for an undisclosed sum.

The deal will see Mother Clucker “hand over the reins” of its brand to FLP, which is owned and controlled by private investment company Calverton UK.

Established in 2013 by co-founders Ross Curnow and Brittney Bean, the fried chicken eatery commenced trading through various pop-ups, before launching its own restaurant in Clerkenwell.

Bean said that the deal has followed “eight years frying chicken in parking lots, pubs, bars, airports, shopping malls and a permanent shop or two”.

Curnow said: “The most important thing to us was that the community we created, both of regular fans and internal team, was valued and FPL is committed to doing just that. It’s a perfect partnership in our eyes and we’re excited for the next chapter.”

Famously Proper was formed in August 2020, and has been searching for a “premium, market leading chicken brand” since its inception.

Simon Wilkinson, CEO at the group, said: “We admire the work that the Mother Clucker team have done over the years as an innovative and pioneering brand, just like Byron, and will sit perfectly within our company.

“We can’t wait to get to know the team and continue the journey of bringing Mother Clucker to more locations.”
