DoorDash’s takeover of Deliveroo has been formally completed following court approval. Following the move, Miki Kuusi, a co-founder of Finnish delivery company Wolt, which was acquired by DoorDash in 2022, has been appointed as CEO of Deliveroo.

Writing on LinkedIn, Kuusi said: “For me personally, this is also the start of a new chapter, as I’ll take on the role as CEO of Deliveroo and relocate to London. I’ll also continue in my dual role as head of International for DoorDash, looking after most of our business outside the US, while continuing at Wolt in the role of chairman, with Marianne Vikkula taking over the reins for the Wolt business.”

Last month, it was announced that Deliveroo founder and chief executive Will Shu would step down after 13 years leading the food delivery platform.

It comes as Deliveroo announced it had agreed to a £2.9bn takeover deal from the US delivery platform rival earlier this year.

The delivery giants said the deal will help improve Deliveroo’s market share while the “complementary geographic regions” will see DoorDash enter nine new countries for the first time, including the UK.

An offer of 180p per share – which marks a 44% increase on the UK company’s share price from the point when takeover talks were made public – was recommended by Deliveroo’s board to shareholders at the time.

In June, the majority of scheme shareholders voted in favour of the move.

DoorDash currently operates in over 30 countries and partners with over 500,000 local businesses on its marketplaces and serves over 42 million monthly active users.

The new combined company will operate in over 40 countries with a combined population exceeding one billion people with annual orders of over £10bn.

In an open letter published today (2 October), Tony Xu, CEO and co-founder of DoorDash, said: “When we started DoorDash in 2013, our mission was simple: grow and empower local economies. We wanted to create a world where every local business—small, medium, and large—could connect with every local consumer.

“We wanted to enable communities to thrive, with vibrant High Streets and ample opportunities for people to earn. It is a mission that we share with Deliveroo – a focus on serving the local communities where we operate – and is what has driven my admiration for what they’ve built over the past 13 years.”

He added: “Today, Deliveroo becomes part of the DoorDash team. Before I share what’s ahead, I want to make one thing very clear: the Deliveroo app and products you know and love aren’t going anywhere. You’ll still be able to order your favourites, run your businesses, or work and earn on the platform as you do today.”

He added: “This is the beginning of a new chapter, not the end of an old one. Deliveroo’s DNA—its customer obsession and relentless pursuit to improve the experience of consumers, merchants, and riders—remains the same. By combining that with DoorDash’s global scale and technology, we have the opportunity to serve more people, in more places, with greater impact.”
