Eat to permanently close after 24 years of trading

Sandwich chain Eat has closed its UK business permanently after 24 years of trading, its owner Pret Manger has announced.
Its sandwich shops closed temporarily last week after the government announced its latest social distancing measures, however Pret Manger has since tweeted announcing the closures would be permanent.
It tweeted: “Eat The Real Food Company has now closed. After 24 years of creating, making and serving real food, it is time for us to say goodbye. Thank You to all of our wonderful customers – we’ve loved every minute of our journey. Love, The EAT. Team.”
Founded in 1996 by Niall and Faith McArthur, Eat’s UK business was put up for sale by its private equity owners, Horizon Capital, in February of last year after it made a £17.3m loss in 2018.
It was acquired by rival Pret last year as it looked to expand its vegetarian offering – Veggie Pret. It currently has 90 stores in the UK primarily in London. It is believed Eat will continue to operate in Paris Gare Du Nord and Spain under franchise agreements.
