Greek street food brand The Athenian will mark its 10th anniversary on 14 November 2025 with the opening of a new restaurant at Boxpark Wembley.
Founded in 2015 by chief executive Tim Vasilakis, the company began as a series of London market stalls serving gyros and souvlaki made with freshly prepared ingredients. It opened its first permanent site in Victoria later that year before expanding to Boxpark Shoreditch and White City.
The Athenian has since grown into a nationwide business with 130 locations across the UK – including Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester, Bournemouth and Glasgow – and seven in Spain. The Wembley opening returns the brand to one of its early locations, as one of its first restaurants operated within a Boxpark site.
The company’s menu has expanded over the years to include vegetarian and vegan dishes, low-carb gyro boxes and other adaptations of traditional Greek recipes..
The business continued to grow through the Covid-19 lockdowns, developing remote kitchens and delivery services to maintain operations. In 2024, it launched a franchise model to support further expansion.
Vasilakis said: “Our Athenian Owl has been soaring for ten years and is now reaching more people than ever with our authentic taste of Greece. Our success is a testament to the growing popularity of Greek cuisine in the UK and a nationwide appetite for authentic and healthy Mediterranean flavours. I look forward to seeing what the next ten years will bring.”
