Brighton set to welcome first seaside food hall

A “unique, diverse and exciting” new food hall is expected to launch in Brighton next year, according to Brighton and Hove council. The new venture, which marks the first food hall for the city, will be housed in the historic Shelter Hall building on Brighton’s seafront. The building is currently being rebuilt after a multi-million pound investment. The project to rebuild the historic landmark began back in 2017 and is expected to be completed early next year. The food hall will be run by new company Sessions Market, who aim to bring together “experienced business operators from the restaurant and design worlds”. CEO of Sessions Market, Dan Warne, said: “We're incredibly excited to be chosen to deliver our ethically-driven, immersive, food hall concept to the much anticipated Shelter Hall seafront development. "Sessions’ world-class vision combines the best food, drink and entertainment from the top and emerging food offers across Brighton & Hove. And we already have a number of the city’s favourite independent restaurants supporting our plans and ready to join us.” Some 10 independent and local food operators will trade in the hall, including those from nearby restaurants or street food vendors, and all traders will be encouraged to use locally sourced produce. Two bars will serve locally-brewed beers. The hall is expected to seat up to 250 customers, and create over 100 new full-time jobs for the city. There will also be a spaced designed to host local events, such as live music, film screenings and art groups. Nancy Platts, a council leader in Brighton, said: “We are really excited about this project which reflects our commitment to community wealth building - creating opportunities for independent local businesses, jobs for residents and ensuring that money spent in the city stays in the city. She added: “We also welcome the commitment from Sessions to using locally-sourced produce and working closely with many local groups including the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership and food waste company Karma, along with its support for our Living Wage campaign. “Residents and visitors can look forward to enjoying the very best of Brighton & Hove’s diverse food offering, knowing that they are helping to support the local economy.” The Shelter Hall renovation forms part of the council’s government-supported Seafront Investment Programme.
