Star Pubs & Bars announces ‘Best Food’ pub

The achievements of Star Pubs and Bars licensees from were celebrated at the operator’s annual awards ceremony last night.

North east multiple pub operator Howard Egglestone took home the ‘Best Food Award’ for his Tomahawk pub in Newcastle. The judges noted the “incredible” variety of food on offer at the pub and how operators were “embracing the latest trends” including vegan and plant based meals.

Representatives from 90 finalist pubs and bars attended the gala ceremony, which was hosted by comedian Ed Byrne at The Belfry resort in Sutton Coldfield. Some 16 awards were presented for areas ranging from innovation and marketing to soft drinks and spirits.

The contenders were judged on everything from food quality through to customer service. Tomahawk scored full marks judges reporting “although the venue was packed, the experience was still exceptional”. The judges also singled out the Tomahawk chefs’ involvement in every stage of the menu process from checking on animal welfare and the butchers’ preparation of the meat through to curing prime cuts with a unique Himalayan salt drying process.

Star Pubs and Bar managing director, Lawson Mountstevens, said: “This was a special year for the Star Awards as it was also the first anniversary of our acquisition of 1,900 pubs from Punch Taverns.

“It has been fantastic to have so many great licensees join Star Pubs and Bars this last year and to see so many of them represented at the Star Awards; the increased numbers took the level of competition up a notch. If the Star Awards is anything to go by, the standard of talent in the leased and tenanted sector is at an all time high. It was inspiring to have such superb operators, who are so passionate and positive about pubs, gathered together.”
