Star Pubs & Bars invests £700k into two Derby pubs

The investment will see outside spaces revamped at both pubs to meet an increased demand for year-round alfresco eating and drinking, as well as interior makeovers to offer food to customers.

Heineken-owned Star Pubs and Bars has announced a £700,000 investment to refurbish the Corner Pin at Chellaston and The Dog and Moon on Sadler Gate, both of which are set to reopen in 2022.

The Corner Pin has been closed since 2018, and The Dog and Moon shut its doors in March last year.

The plans will transform The Corner Pin into a local catering location for the community and for occasions, and it will be renamed The Chellaston Arms.

Meanwhile, the 300-year old Dog and Moon will become a modern craft bar and revert to its previous name of The Shakespeare.

The outside spaces will be revamped at both pubs with new planting, signage, festoon lighting, heating, new furniture and extra capacity for customers in a bid to meet an increased demand for year-round alfresco eating and drinking due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, The Corner Pin’s garden will be landscaped to become “one of the biggest” in Chellaston, with seating for 105 people and a covered, heated pergola. The Dog and Moon will also have an outdoor area accommodating 60 customers, doubling the pub’s current size.

Additionally, interior makeovers will reportedly upgrade the pubs with new designs and fittings, whilst “retaining all their character and original features”.

New kitchens are set to be installed, enabling both pubs to introduce food, and other planned improvements include refurbishing the customer toilets, installing dispense equipment in the cellars, and updating the licensee accommodation.

Amanda Bloor, Star Pubs and Bars area manager for Derby, said: “We’re keen to revitalise these two wonderful old Derby pubs for people to enjoy; we just need the right licensees to take them on. The pandemic has frustrated our plans. Now restrictions have lifted, we’re keen to recruit new operators and get these pubs open again as soon as possible.

“These are well-known pubs with fantastic potential that residents want to see back in business. With investment they will thrive. They are great opportunities for experienced licensees wanting a landmark pub in a high-profile location in Derby.”
