One in ten use takeaway for the first time, says NPD group

One in ten people will use a delivery or takeaway service for the first time during the Covid-19 outbreak, the NPD Group has revealed. 

The findings came from the Covid-19 British Foodservice Sentiment Tracker, launched by  the global information group in light of the ongoing pandemic. 

The survey was conducted on 20 March, before the nationwide lockdown was announced, though NPD said that its findings still indicate that there is “scope for the delivery channel to extend its reach”.

Some 39% of respondents said they are already using delivery services, whilst 8% of those who regularly order from a delivery service said that they will “now do so more often”.

The tracker also revealed that nine out of 10 respondents agree that temporary closure of out-of-home or eat-out establishments is a sensible precaution. 

Looking ahead, 53% of respondents said that they will return to eating out once the pandemic subsides and restaurants can open in a “conventional manner”. 

In addition, a quarter of respondents said that they will also “eat out more often than before” once the lockdown eases.
