Greggs to reopen 800 stores

Greggs has announced the locations of 800 shops that are set to reopen on 18 June. The bakery chain will reopen these sites following a “successful trial” in a selection of North East sites, and will now resume operations in a number of areas across the country. In its latest announcement, the chain confirmed that shops will be open for takeaway only, with all seating areas and customer toilets remaining closed to the public. Further operational and social distancing measures will be implemented across the reopened sites in order to keep customers and employees safe. A one-way system has been implemented across all sites, for example, while new screens have been installed at all till points. In addition, cash will not be taken, with payment only accepted via card, contactless or Greggs Rewards. Only one adult per household will be able to enter the premises, while a reduced number of employees will work behind the tills. All employees will be provided with protective workwear, including face masks, visors and gloves. There will be a limited menu available across the 800 shops which includes Greggs much-loved bakes, hot drinks and sweet treats. In addition, Greggs will also offer a digital-only service at a small number of shops, enabling customers to order through Just Eat or the new Greggs Click and Collect service. Roger Whiteside, Greggs CEO, said: “Over the past month, we have carried out robust trials using our new operational and social distancing measures and they have progressed well. “This has allowed us to move to our next re-opening phase with just over 800 of our shops welcoming customers back this week.” He added: “The health and safety of our colleagues and customers is our priority and for this reason we have put in the time and effort to make a thorough assessment of all shops. “Although we will open with a reduced range, this will be a significant step in us helping the nation get back up and running and serving the communities that we operate in.”
