Soho’s Fernandez & Wells closes

Fernandez & Wells has closed its first ever site on Soho’s Lexington Street, the closure leaves the chain with three outlets all in the Soho area.

The chain, founded by Rick Wells and Jorge Fernandez, which specialises in a unique blend of tapas, wine and sandwiches, has been open at the site on Lexington Street since 2007.

Fernandez and Wells had offered a more casual experience during daytime at the site before dimming the lights and offering the choice of red or white wine served alongside a menu of charcuterie, cheese, and tinned seafood.

Wells said: “Yes, it’s true, Lex is closed. End of an era. It is sad of course but we have plenty of happy memories and Soho tales to savour.

“It is ultimately the story of London and the changing face of Soho. What we brought in raised the bar and now that’s come full circle, with the arrival of the Ivy ‘chain’, beauty products and designer clothes brands. Rents and rates have shot up while many of our core customer base, the creatives have headed east or elsewhere.”
