Yorkshire couple launches England’s first self-built distillery

More than 200 guests attended the launch of England’s first self-built distillery based in Sutton-on-the-Forest in North Yorkshire.

Cooper King Distillery celebrated its launch on 2 June where Founders’ Club members, investors, family, friends and supporters enjoyed distillery tours, local food, music and cocktails.

The Yorkshire couple Chris Jaume, chartered architect, and Dr Abbie Neilson, former scientist, founded the craft gin and whisky distillery after embarking on a four-year entrepreneurial journey.

With plans to set up their own independent gin and whisky distillery, Jaume and Neilson established Cooper King Distillery in 2016, and went into production in April 2018.

Neilson said: “We are so grateful to all our friends, family, investors, suppliers and founders that have supported us over the last four years. It was quite overwhelming to have a room full of people that have each helped us in some way on our journey to set up our dream distillery.“

She added: “It was great to finally see people enjoying our inaugural product, Cooper King Dry Gin. After the long process of self-building the distillery, it’s amazing to be finally producing and selling our products.”
