Gordon Ramsay Restaurant group lays off London restaurant staff

Celebrity chef Gordan Ramsay has terminated the contract of around 500 members of staff at his London restaurants as his business deals with the coronavirus outbreak.

Staff were informed at a meeting earlier this week. The Gordon Ramsay Restaurant Group will reportedly pay the wages of staff for a further four-weeks up until 17 April. 

Ramsay’s  London restaurants include the Gordon Ramsay, Petrus, Bread Street Kitchenand the recently opened Lucky Cat.

It is believed that staff have not been guaranteed to return once the properties reopen following government lockdown.

The news comes despite the government announcing it will pay 80% of wages to employees who aren’t able to work due to the coronavirus, up to £2,500 a month.

A spokesperson for the restaurant group told the Daily Mail: “Gordon Ramsay Restaurants is continuing to work tirelessly in exceptional, unprecedented, global circumstances to ensure that as many employees as possible are being retained by the business.

“We are no different from any other restaurant/retail business large and small in the UK and around the world responding to the current crisis.”

They added: “We welcome greatly and fully support all the initiatives introduced by Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak in particular the coronavirus Job Retention Scheme which is still being refined.

“We continue to work closely with our landlords, government agencies and all third-party suppliers associated with the business through these very challenging times.”
